The pirate MMO Atlas has lost a lot of players since the start of the early access phase at the end of 2018. But the team is not giving up and has exciting plans for the near future.
What is the current situation with Atlas? In December 2018, Atlas launched with nearly 59,000 concurrent players at peak. Now, in June 2020, around 3,000 players are playing the pirate MMO according to Steamcharts. Atlas has thus lost about 95% of its players. At the end of 2019, the situation looked quite different for the game.
Furthermore, it has been very quiet around the game since early April 2020. Players thought that the developers had given up. But that is not the case.
What are the developers’ plans? The development team has broken the silence and announced a major update for Atlas. This will bring significant changes:
- The game world map will be completely overhauled.
- The new map will shift the focus away from land battles and towards naval battles.
- The emphasis will now be more on PvP.
- Trade winds will play a role in commerce.
- You will be able to build farms and warehouses.
The major overhaul of Atlas will bring a reset or wipe. All players will have to start over afterwards.
What about PvE? The developers explain that they want to gradually remove the PvE elements of the game and turn them into something unique. Until then, the EU PvE server represents the only possibility to still engage in PvE.
What exactly this means is unclear. Perhaps there will be a kind of PvE spin-off of Atlas or new PvE servers with special content? The developers will reveal more about this in due time.
When is the big update coming? The developers have announced the major overhaul of Atlas for July. A specific date will follow.
What else is new with Atlas? The team now plans to ensure a regular supply of content with newly added developers. It is currently planned to release an update every month after the major overhaul.
Will you give Atlas a new chance after the massive update? By the way, Atlas, like ARK: Survival Evolved, falls into the survival game category. In addition to these two, there are several other very interesting titles in this genre. Which ones they are, you can read in the MeinMMO list of the 23 best survival games 2020 for PS4, Xbox, and PC.
