For Season 13, the developers focused on the jungle role. Through the adjustments, they aimed to make the position more attractive for new players of League of Legends. However, some aspects were overlooked by the developers that made the role nearly unplayable for long-time players.
How has Riot tried to help the jungler? In the preseason, several innovations came to the Rift. Riot Games had reintroduced the Chemtech Dragon to the map and revamped the rest of the jungle. The biggest innovation was jungle pets.
What are jungle pets? Jungle players can select one of 3 companions when choosing their jungle item, each bringing unique abilities. The 3 different pets are called in English:
- Mosstomper – Gives you a shield when you are out of combat. Additionally, you get increased resistances.
- Scorchclaw – Deals additional damage and slows down the first opponent when you attack them.
- Gustwalker – Increases your movement speed when you come from bushes or kill neutral monsters.
The loyal companions are supposed to make your life in the Rift easier and have an influence on the game. They especially offer the possibility to adjust certain tactics and play styles. This was already utilized by Riot in their last patches.
In the forum, the topic has become loud that the loyal companions reveal your position. This led to a bigger discussion on how Riot Games could handle the pets.
Even after many years since the game exists, the developers still manage to excite their players:
The pet is a little traitor
What is the problem with the pets? In the Reddit post, the user “UYouOrYew” described situations in which the seemingly loyal companion betrays you. This mostly happened in situations where champions became invisible or quickly disappeared somewhere.
When the champion Wukong hasn’t moved for a while, he might have used his W ability. Then he becomes invisible and can escape into the next bush or leap over a small wall. However, the pet seemed to hop along with a slight delay and thus revealed Wukong’s location.
The pet remains visible to everyone and reveals the position of the invisible player to enemies. This makes ganks on the lane by invisible characters like Shaco or Evelynn significantly harder without the enemies noticing.
What does the community think about it? In the community, the visibility of the pets is considered an “exploit” – a mechanic that enemies can exploit to gain an advantage. Due to the visual representation of the pet, it is apparently possible to accurately guess the location of the opposing jungler.
The user “HolmatKingOfStorms” therefore suggested that the pets should only be visible to the jungler and no other player can see the pet. Other users thought that the visibility of the pet could be extended to your own team so that everyone can enjoy watching the pet grow (via reddit).
Especially further tips or exploits are being shared under the post, which players should consider. For example, the pet is revealed by Rek’Sai and stops attacking in between, even though it might be needed.
