If you pause the movie “Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald” at the right moment, you can discover an astonishing detail.
The “Fantastic Beasts” film series is a prequel to Harry Potter. The films take place several years before the story of the world-famous wizard boy.
Some well-known characters appear, such as Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, or Gellert Grindelwald. However, new actors have been cast for their younger versions. Those who pay close attention will find two familiar faces.
A tragic backstory
The past of Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald has already been addressed in Harry Potter itself. In their youth, they shared more than just friendship, which is also explored in “Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald.”
Grindelwald turned increasingly to the dark side, leading to a duel between the two, which ended fatally for Dumbledore’s sister Ariana. Later, Dumbledore would ultimately defeat his former confidant in a legendary wizard duel.
What do we see in Harry Potter? In “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1,” we see a photo of Dumbledore and Grindelwald from their youth. They were played by Jamie Campbell Bower (Grindelwald) and Toby Regbo (Dumbledore).
What do we see in Fantastic Beasts? These two actors returned to their roles for “Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald.” However, only for a brief scene, to be precise at minute 68:15.
Most of the time, Jude Law as Dumbledore and Johnny Depp as Grindelwald are seen. However, when Dumbledore looks into the Mirror of Erised and sees what he desires most, we see the two in their youth. These young versions were again portrayed, as in Harry Potter, by Jamie Campbell Bower and Toby Regbo.
This makes them the only actors to appear in both Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts.
Who are the two? Even though their appearances in the Harry Potter universe have only been brief so far, you might find these two actors familiar.
- Jamie Campbell Bower is primarily known as Caius from Twilight, but has also appeared in Sweeney Todd, Stranger Things, or City of Bones.
- Toby Regbo is known for his roles in Mr. Nobody, Treasure Island, The Last Kingdom, or Reign.
