The path to fame is often paved with unexpected turns and surprises. Patrick Stewart reveals in his autobiography Making It So: A Memoir

The shy newcomer who conquered Hollywood
Who is it about? It’s the story of Tom Hardy, a name now known for his roles in blockbusters like Inception
, The Revenant
, The Dark Knight: Rises
, and Mad Max: Fury Road
.
Tom Hardy has carved out a place in the hearts of film fans worldwide, but his career did not start off promisingly. According to Patrick Stewart, known among other things as Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), Tom Hardy was anything but sociable on the set of Star Trek: Nemesis
as Shinzon.
In Stewart’s own words:
The actor who played the villain in the film was a strange and lonely young man from London. His name was Tom Hardy. He did not speak to anyone. He never said “Hello,” never said, “Goodbye.” And he spent his time with his girlfriend in his dressing room.
On the evening of his last shooting day, he quietly walked out the door.

The scene Stewart refers to was a meeting with the then-unknown Tom Hardy, who had shown up on set to play the antagonist. But instead of introducing himself or exchanging pleasantries, Hardy simply played his scenes and vanished quietly.
This is someone we will never hear from again
– Tom Hardy proved him wrong
This strange reserve and aloofness made Stewart think at the time that we would probably never hear from this young actor again.
But he proved him wrong. Tom Hardy, who struggled with personal demons, including alcohol and drug problems, underwent an impressive transformation and is now known worldwide.
His performances in the above-mentioned films led to his breakthrough. He has become one of the most sought-after actors, and his name is now associated with numerous award-winning productions. Patrick Stewart is pleased: Well, it makes me happy that he proved me wrong!
