Grinding Gear Games is working on a major expansion for the action RPG Path of Exile. The developers even believe that it can compete with a potential Diablo 4.
What has been announced? Grinding Gear Games hasn’t revealed much about the next expansion for the online hack ‘n slash Path of Exile yet. However, it is said that it will represent some kind of “Next Generation” step for the game.
This means that significant and fundamental changes will be introduced in the RPG.

The Fight Against Diablo 4
What does this have to do with Diablo 4? Grinding Gear Games director Chris Wilson explains that the expansion with version number 4.0.0 will compete with Diablo 4, according to the developers.
What does “Next Generation” mean? Grinding Gear Games wants to not only advance Path of Exile but also move the entire genre forward. The addon is intended to make the game something that represents the next generation of action RPGs, in order to be able to keep up with modern representatives of the genre.
What exactly this means is unclear.
The Addon is Awaited
When will the addon be shown? At Exilecon, fans are supposed to be able to experience the expansion. Exilecon will take place on November 16 and 17 in Auckland, New Zealand.
However, this is just a teaser from a very early version of the addon.
When will the expansion be released? According to Grinding Gear Games, the addon is still at least a year and a half away from release.
Before that, update 3.7 “Legion” will be released, which brings the Legion Challenge League, new items, gems, and the long-awaited overhaul of melee combat in June. Additionally, a major update with version number 3.9 is planned for December.
If the expansion 4.0.0 releases at the end of 2020, it would indeed be possible for Path of Exile to directly compete with hack ‘n slash Diablo 4 – provided that Blizzard’s action RPG is also released in 2020.
