The next expansion of the hack ‘n slash Path of Exile (PC, PS4, Xbox One) was supposed to start on December 11. However, due to the postponed release of Cyberpunk 2077, it will be delayed.
What about the next expansion of PoE? According to the developers, they are on track and will complete the last expansion for 2020 on time. However, Grinding Gear Games will not release it then. The delay is not due to development setbacks.
Cyberpunk 2077 versus Path of Exile
What is the reason for the release delay? CD Projekt Red announced on October 27 that the release of the action RPG Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed until December 10. This would cause the expansion of PoE to be released one day later, which the developers do not find acceptable. They explain:
Yesterday, CD Projekt Red announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will now be released on December 10. We do not want to put our players in a position of having to choose between these two titles, so we have decided to steer clear of Cyberpunk and postpone the release of Path of Exile 3.13 to January 2021.
How are the developers using the time? As already mentioned, Path of Exile 3.13 is expected to be completed on time according to current plans. Therefore, the team will then immediately start working on version 3.14.
The delay in the release of PoE 3.13 may affect the releases of 3.14. The team intends to inform the community shortly about this.
What will players do over Christmas and New Year? The team states that there will be at least one event for the community to engage with during the end of the year.
To ensure you have some interesting Path of Exile content to play during the Christmas/New Year period, we are planning at least one multi-week event (for example Flashback). We will announce details of these events as soon as we have a plan in place.
How are players reacting to this? The announcement is not well-received in the community. While some players show understanding, others do not understand what Cyberpunk 2077 has to do with Path of Exile.
