Path of Exile 2 is set to be released this year. Now the Game Director from Grinding Gear Games, Jonathan Rogers, has commented on the monetization of the ARPG.
What does Path of Exile 2 want to do differently than Diablo 4? The Game Director from Grinding Gear Games has now spoken about the monetization of Path of Exile 2. In a conversation with PCGamer, the director was asked whether the developers had considered the business model of Diablo 4 for Path of Exile 2.
Diablo 4 has achieved high revenues through the sale of the game as a full-price title, while Path of Exile 1 is practically free to play.
Jonathan Rogers gave a clear response: Path of Exile 2 will be “just like” Path of Exile 1 regarding monetization. So you will once again be able to experience the game for free, but there will likely be a shop where you can spend money.

Path of Exile 2 does not orient itself to Diablo 4
What does the Game Director say about Diablo 4? The Game Director states that Path of Exile 2 will not become an MMO. He does not like MMOs and sees no benefit for his game in that.
I don’t think that shared game space offers a lot of value. There are many theoretical advantages, such as ‘you can meet someone and become friends and have adventures’, and I am sure that sometimes happens, but the vast majority of players do not experience this. I find it a waste of time since most players spend their time in instanced dungeons anyway.
Jonathan Rogers in conversation with PCGamer
What exactly is now the opposite of Diablo 4? Path of Exile wants to convert happy players into paying customers. Those who like the game should spend their money on cosmetic items or inventory space. Those who are not so fond of the game will be able to play through to the end without spending money. In Diablo 4, it is the exact opposite; players pay first and then find out if the game is for them.
If you want to play Path of Exile, you will have to wait a bit longer, as the beta of the game has recently been postponed. You can find out more about it here: Path of Exile 2 postpones the beta, but promises to be of “release quality,” says the director
