At the ExileCon 2019, a convention about the game Path of Exile, the developers announced Path of Exile 2. However, the sequel is actually an expansion of the first part.
What is Path of Exile 2? Path of Exile 2 is not a successor in the classical sense, as it shares many contents with its predecessor. It primarily expands the existing Path of Exile and overhauls many old game systems, just like Patch 4.0 was originally supposed to do.
Path of Exile 2 is supposed to bring the following innovations:
- A new story set 20 years after the death of Kitava, encompassing a total of seven acts.
- For the new campaign, there will be 19 new Ascendancy classes, which, however, are based on the previous classes of PoE.
- A new Gem system will be introduced, where the gems are no longer embedded into the equipment, but into the skills.
- The entire equipment system will be overhauled and there will be plenty of new models.
Further content and adjustments to the fundamental systems of Path of Exile are expected to be presented by the time of the first tests.
When will Path of Exile 2 be released? There has been no announcement regarding a release for Path of Exile 2 yet. However, initial tests are planned for late 2020.
The update 4.0 had a similar release timeframe. In summer 2019, it was stated that the update could be expected in about 1.5 years. This would put it well ahead of Blizzard’s Diablo 4.
Players of the first part won’t lose anything
How do the two games interact with each other? Owners of Path of Exile 1 are not supposed to lose any progress with the release of the sequel. Rather, Path of Exile 2 expands the old game world.
All adjustments to equipment and game systems will also be applied to the first part. Furthermore, both games share the Atlas endgame. Microtransactions will also remain.
Path of Exile 2 is more of an addon that also includes all the content of the base game. The release of PoE 2 is therefore the perfect moment for new players to jump in and access everything.
What’s next for Path of Exile 1? On December 13, the new update 3.9 for Path of Exile will be released. This will expand the game’s story.
Even after that, the usual update rhythm is expected to continue. Although work is being done on Path of Exile 2, new content is planned every 3 months.
Path of Exile Mobile
What was announced at the convention? Another innovation from ExileCon is the mobile game of Path of Exile. The game will be developed directly by Grinding Gear Games and not by an external company to ensure it meets the company’s quality standards.
In the trailer, it is revealed that:
- Path of Exile Mobile is supposed to have the same depth as the PC game
- The maps and sessions will be adjusted to be shorter for mobile
- It’s not supposed to be as bad as typical mobile games
Path of Exile itself recently celebrated its sixth anniversary. We took another close look at the game:
