Starfield has received a major update bringing long-awaited new features. But a new type of mission has also been introduced, which is met with little favor. For a single quest, Bethesda now wants money.
What does the new update bring? The games from Bethesda have been so long-lasting in the past mainly because they have been kept alive by community mods. Just think of Skyrim, which can be changed at will by an incredible number of fan mods. Fallout 4 was even recently “saved” by fans when many mods stopped working after an update.
There are already mods for Starfield as well, including one that improves the skill system. Thanks to Bethesda’s Creation Kit, creating and sharing mods is now easier. The new update for Starfield brings this tool to the game. Mods can now be downloaded and installed through the Creation Club.
This applies to both free and paid mods. If you pay for a mod, you need to buy a currency through the Creation Club. And Bethesda is now taking advantage of this. In addition to the mod tool, a new type of mission has also been integrated into the game. This is currently causing excitement among fans – because Bethesda is charging money for it.
The second mission is already paid
What kind of mission is it? With the update, players can now accept missions from the bounty hunter organization Trackers Alliance. That sounds great at first, but there is a catch.
Only the first mission, which is repeatable, can be played for free. The second quest, called “The Vulture,” cannot be completed without spending real money. Instead, the quest is sold via the Creation Club and costs 700 credits.
This is approximately 7 euros, considering that a credit package of 1,000 credits costs 9.99 euros. The next smallest package contains only 500 credits – so those who want to buy the new quest will have to spend more than they initially need.
What does the community think? Many players are outraged on Reddit that Bethesda is now charging money for a single quest. However, the discussion revolves around the idea that Bethesda is likely testing how players react to this model.
Users like The_IrishTurtle fear: “If people accept this as okay, there is no reason for Bethesda to stop doing this in the future.”
He continues, saying that additional guilds could be added, and for their missions, money could also be charged.
“It is much easier to squeeze $7 payments out of players over a year than to release a $70 DLC with 10 quests in it,” Thatweasel also confirms.
Many fans are far from agreeing with this pricing model. On Reddit, they write:
- “7 euros is too much for a quest,” finds TheMightyNovac and calls for a lower price.
- “They will be sued for this,” speculates Natkoekje given the outraged reactions.
- “It is surreal that people accept this,” writes gogonbo.
- “Personally, I find it a damn joke to buy individual missions for a single-player RPG, but I am aware of how the industry has evolved,” CRKing77 admits.
