Finally, the online mode of Red Dead Redemption 2 has launched. Players rushed to the servers of Red Dead Online right at the start and eagerly tried out what was possible. Xbox players had issues with the launch of the online beta and were unable to start immediately.
The players who are already playing and watching streams have highlighted some features. The following features are particularly praised on social media.
Catch other players with the lasso
It quickly became clear that the lasso is a part of the online mode in Red Dead Redemption 2. You can use it to catch other players and then bind them.
What happens when someone is bound? Players can try to free themselves from the rope by repeatedly pressing a button. It is said that this is also possible when being carried on the back of a horse while bound, to break free from there. Those who do not want to resist being bound can also choose the option to die.
The players’ joy over this feature is great. They are already thinking of cunning methods to use the lasso.
Initial testers say that you can only catch players with a lasso if their honor level is low. Players with a medium or high honor level apparently cannot be caught and bound with a lasso. This is probably to prevent the lasso from being used too frequently.
Detailed character creation in Red Dead Online
Already before the launch of Red Dead Online, fans wished to be able to customize characters in detail.
The customization options are quite extensive. First, there are the categories name, appearance, whistle, and skills. These are then divided into more specific categories.
Appearance: As visual changes, you can set the following things:
- Base appearance with 14 different heads (women have 15)
- Gender
- Skin color
- Age
- Body type
- Eyes and eyebrows
- Nose
- Mouth and lips
- Jaw and chin
- Ears
- Cheeks
- Teeth
- Hair (with hairstyle and color)
- Facial hair
- Lifestyle
- This seems to be a more detailed customization of the skin. Choose settings for freckles or moles as well as scars.
Whistles: Here you can determine the style, pitch, and clarity of the whistle.
Skills: Here you assign skill points in health, stamina, and Dead Eye. Initially, you have 2 skill points available to distribute among the attributes. A maximum of 10 points per attribute.
Makeup: If you create a female character, you can also choose the makeup.
Players say they are happy with the many options in character creation. Some had existing characters in mind that they want to play in Red Dead Online. For example, Django from Django Unchained. Generally, the character editor is said to be better than in GTA Online.
Your horses are safe when you are in the house
If you leave your horse outside and enter a building, you don’t have to worry about your steed. Players report that horses cannot be killed when the owner is currently in a building.
Players are happy that they do not have to worry about where their horse is. Or whether other players are in the area when they are themselves in a building. They also note that there is a horse insurance that currently costs $0.
Reddit user Moii-Celst further explains: You do not need horse insurance. Horses do not permanently die. If a horse is critically injured and you cannot heal it in time, it goes to your stable. Then you can pay the veterinarian through the menu or visit the stable to heal the horse there. The latter is the cheaper option.
What does horse insurance provide? It is meant to cover the costs of medications that the horse may take to recover health faster.
The point screen after a match is great
After you have played a match, your team and the opposing team are presented on the screen. To make it clear who won and who lost, Rockstar Games chose a cool way. This screenshot was shared by Reddit user fifthdayofmay:
This creative way of presenting defeated opponents in coffins receives a lot of praise. “That’s really great” or “This is awesome, I’m so excited!” are comments made. As minor criticism, it’s noted that the bright colors as neckerchiefs and hats are considered too much.
Races in the online mode of RDR 2
The races in Red Dead Online were already announced early through a leak. Now players have been able to try them out and draw initial positive conclusions.
The team at RockstarIntel writes on Twitter that races are “so much fun”. You can pick up stamina for the horse from the ground or shoot other players with weapons during the race. However, aim assist is disabled.
Players praise that the first races were already a lot of fun and it is especially exciting to be able to punch your opponents off their horses.
