Have you started Remnant: From the Ashes again due to the current Free2Play hype? Here you will learn how to defeat the first two story bosses, Singe (translated: Scorch) and the Ent, and what they have in store for you.
What kind of bosses are they? Singe is a large, apparently corrupted dragon, who fights you with fire. The Ent is a huge, living tree that attacks you with rot and smaller creatures.
Both bosses are the guardians of the labyrinth you are supposed to advance into and block your way. However, for each run you make, only one of the two bosses is active. If you encounter Singe, you will not face the Ent as an opponent until you restart or the Adventure Mode.
Both are the respective first world bosses you must defeat for the story. Before that, you will only meet a dungeon boss (or several, depending on the route) and a horde fight while defending the seed mother.
The two bosses require a bit more finesse because they confront you with new mechanics. Proper preparation is extremely useful here, then it works even without the immortal build quite easily.
Regardless of which boss you see in your run, you will always receive the trait “Quick Fingers”, which increases your reload speed for a victory.
Defeating Singe – Here’s how
What attacks does the boss have and how do I counter them?
- Attack: Fireball – Two fireballs that Singe fires successively at a distance.
Counter – Move or roll to the side. Make sure not to touch any fire on the ground. - Attack: Fire Breath – A cone of fire from Singe’s mouth.
Counter – Stay a bit away or behind the boss. If you are within range, you cannot dodge the attack. - Attack: Charge – Singe roars and runs towards you.
Counter – Wait for his charge and then evade to the side. - Attack: Fire Strike – Singe takes off and lands with a powerful strike.
Counter – Wait until he is in free fall and then dodge in time. - Attack: Four-hit Combo – A combo of three strikes and one leap attack.
Counter – Dodge backwards or move behind the boss. If you are close enough, you can roll forward under the leap attack (useful for shotguns and melee fighters).
The dragon’s weak spot is a glowing spot on its chest. Aim for this if you want to defeat it quickly.
Singe also summons some adds that you should eliminate, simple fighters. However, these start to burn and become elite enemies when you fire at them. Try to defeat them with melee attacks if possible before they transform, to save ammo.
What items help me? Cooling agents and ammo boxes are almost essential for Singe, especially on higher difficulty levels. You will need a lot of ammunition for him and his adds. These items help you keep the fire damage under control.
Adrenaline can also help you dodge better and defeat the additional enemies. With the increased movement speed, you are no longer as vulnerable to his attacks.
If you run out of cooling agents, rolling multiple times helps put out the fire if you ever catch fire.
What loot does he drop? Depending on how you defeat Singe, he has different loot for you. One of the items gives you a melee weapon, the other a handgun:
- “Blazing Heart” – Kill Singe without destroying his tail. Grants the handgun “Spitfire” with the inherent mod “Flamethrower” at McCabe. This causes fire damage to opponents in front of you for 10 seconds and ignites them.
- “Dragon Links” – Kill Singe after you have destroyed his tail. Attack only his tail until it falls off. This only happens late in the fight. You will receive the sword “Smolder” with the bonus effect “Blaze”, which has a 35% chance to ignite enemies and deal fire damage for 10 seconds. Charged attacks always ignite enemies.
Note that in each run you can only get one of the two items. So decide as early as possible which one you want. If you want both weapons, you will need to defeat Singe again in Adventure Mode.
Defeating the Ent – Here’s how
What attacks does the boss have and how do I counter them?
- Attack: Stomp – The boss stomps down and creates a shockwave. Stand a bit away and roll towards the wave.
Counter – If you roll in the same direction as it moves, it will still hit you. - Attack: Hand Slam – The Ent slams his hands on the ground.
Counter – Evade to the side. - Attack: Throwing Bombs – The boss leans forward and fires bombs from his back. These fly in a high arc towards your position.
Counter – Move aside as they fly and avoid rot clouds and other enemies. - Attack: Summoning “Hollows” – A scream that attracts “Hollows”, small, relatively light opponents. The scream stuns you, against which you can do nothing.
Counter – Make sure to kill as many “Rot Warts” beforehand. These are opponents filled with rot clouds that explode when they reach you.
The boss’s weak point is a large, red spot on his back. It is easiest to hit when you stand in front of him after he has leaned forward for his attacks. You can destroy his legs to take away all of his abilities except for the bombs.
Due to the “Rot Warts” and the Ent’s attacks, there are always rot clouds in the arena. Be careful not to touch these or at least not for too long. A full rot meter will kill you immediately.
What items help me? The most useful item is definitely the oil elixir. With it, you remove your rot and get a 20% resistance against the effect for some time. Bring some of those with you.
Adrenaline and rage dust also help you. You want to defeat the Ent as quickly as possible before his attacks and the many enemies overwhelm you. High damage in a short time helps you with that.
What loot does he drop? Just like Singe, there are two ways to defeat the Ent: If you destroy his legs, or if you leave them intact. This results again in two different items and weapons:
- “Spore Gland” – Kill the Ent without destroying his legs. You will receive the shotgun “Spore Launcher” at McCabe with the inherent mod “Spore Shot”. This shoots a rot ball that deals damage to enemies in a radius and slows them down.
- “Twisted Heart” – Destroy the Ent’s legs before he dies. Focus on one of them until it falls off. You will receive the hammer “Petrified Maul” from McCabe with the ability to deal a small AoE damage and the bonus effect “Heavy Impact”. This has a 55% chance to deal 100% additional stagger damage. Charged attacks always cause the effect.
Just like with Singe, you will receive only one of these items per run. If you want both weapons, you will need to defeat the Ent again in Adventure Mode.
