In Borderlands 4, the throwing knife is becoming a fan favorite. The reason: With these small knives, you can sometimes inflict more damage than with anything else.

The Borderlands series is known as a loot shooter, but it’s not just about guns. On one hand, there are incredibly bizarre weapons that only loosely qualify as “firearms”, and on the other hand, there are plenty of other things you can throw at your enemies.

New in Borderlands 4 is the option to find throwing knives from Jakobs. And in a game series that offers rocket launchers, laser beams, or cloning, teleporting grenades, a knife might initially sound weak.

But these things can be really dangerous with the right perks.

Players hunt for the perfect knife in Borderlands 4

What makes the throwing knives so good? In the Borderlands 4 subreddit, many players are sharing their experiences. One post gained attention: A user shared on Reddit his find of the “Bullseye Vivisecting Throwing Knife” from Jakobs.

The knife received over 1,400 upvotes and generated more than 250 comments. In the replies, many are also searching for such a knife. But why?

The answer: The knife has various abilities that make it incredibly dangerous.

• The upgrade “Damage Amp Payload” ensures that hit targets take 15% more damage for 5 seconds.
• The “Penetrator Augment” ensures that all damage dealt to the target is critical hits for 5 seconds.
• Additionally, there’s a 24% chance for critical damage.
• And Jakobs grenades (that is, the throwing knives) deal critical damage on weak point hits.

In short: A lot of critical damage is being dealt here. Especially, the “Penetrator Augment” ensures that other damage also becomes critical. The most impressive example that utilizes this effect is currently possibly the strongest build in the game: Vex, the Siren, can take down bosses in mere seconds.

Where to find the knife? This is the good and bad news: Everywhere and nowhere. It’s a world drop that could appear anywhere. This means you always have the chance to find it, but you can’t farm it specifically.

If you want to specifically hunt for the knife, it’s best to farm bosses or loot spots that yield a lot of loot. And then it’s just a matter of hoping!

Borderlands 4 offers various skins and colors to make your character more unique. A certain type of skins has particularly captivated players.

What kind of skins are these? User @EpicNNG shares their discovery on X.com. They found that each legendary weapon has a “Shiny” skin variant that is extremely rare. However, once obtained, it would automatically unlock for every subsequent iteration of the respective item.

As soon as such a variant drops, there is an indicator that shows you that this is the variant in question. The skins are very shiny compared to the others and have rainbow effects.

Why are players celebrating the skin variants? @EpicNNG is very excited about this find and refers to it as “his endgame” because he thinks it’s pretty cool that there is so much to collect. Many users in the comments agree with him. After all, there are about 80 shiny weapon skins to hunt down.

Many compare the hunt for them to hunting Shinys in Pokémon games and bring corresponding references into the comment section: “Shiny Legendary Hunting Series? Gotta catch them all!” as @BadGuyNick comments, for example.

But getting these skins is not so easy, as they are extremely rare.

Cool Skins Require Grind

How do you get skins in Borderlands 4? Where you get the different skins largely depends on which one you have in mind. Some can be easily earned by completing certain quests, while others drop from world bosses, for example. You can also repeatedly defeat bosses if you spend money at Moxxi’s Fat Chance machine.

However, the drop chance for these skins is very low, so you need to prepare for a tough grind if you want to collect them all. But as we all know, fashion is always an integral part of the endgame, which is why only a few vault hunters will be deterred from wanting to hold their shiny skins in their hands.

If you are skilled, you can also increase the difficulty of your game in the settings to raise the value and probability of loot, significantly increasing your chances.

Borderlands 4 has attracted many players to the new loot shooter since its release, but many have been struggling with the game’s performance from the very beginning. The head behind Borderlands 4 has now stated that it is quite normal for some PCs to only achieve 30 FPS. However, the community only partially agrees with his statements.

What performance problems are there? Borderlands 4 celebrated a new player record on September 14, 2025. With 304,398 players, it reached a new high (source: SteamDB). However, right from the release, many players faced significant performance issues. Players are also voicing this in their reviews on Steam.

Currently (as of September 15, 2025, 09:30 AM) the game holds 65% positive reviews and is rated as Mixed. Although the performance issue is significant and they want to work on it, the head of the game’s developer studio, Gearbox Entertainment, stated that not all PCs can be expected to achieve high FPS and that compromises must be made. The community is not taking this positively.

The game is incredibly optimized

What does Randy Pitchford say about the performance? In a new thread on x.com, Pitchford comments on the performance of Borderlands 4 and praises his game. He begins his thread by stating that players need to understand the relationship between their hardware and the software they are playing.

He continues: We have developed an amazing, fun, and huge looter-shooter campaign game. The game is incredibly optimized – which means that the software does what we want it to do without wasting unnecessary cycles on bad processes.

In a previous post on x.com, Pitchford also explained that players shouldn’t be 4k-stubborn and should set the game to 1440p if they want a better experience and don’t have high-end specifications.

Pitchford states that it is a mistake to expect to achieve a high frame rate and a high resolution with minimum specifications. Compromises between features must be made if one doesn’t want to be disappointed. Although they are working on PC performance, he claims that the real problems only affect a small part of the player base.

At the end of his thread, he again recommends DLSS, a feature that promises more FPS through AI on NVIDIA graphics cards. If one needs help, they should reach out to customer service. He also thanks the fans for their passion.

The developers of the game also released a guide to better optimize the game, but this also attracted criticism. Many players reported that even with strong high-end graphics cards, they had issues with the game and only achieved just 60 FPS.

DLSS is also not always popular among players. Many players believe that DLSS is often mentioned as a feature to justify poor optimization.

Players Stand Against Pitchford

What are players saying about the new thread? While some players support Pitchford, many are not well-received by the new tweets. Reports of problems with high-end PCs are coming in, but also console issues that Pitchford does not address in his tweets.

@Zy_6969 (via x.com) agrees with Pitchford on many points, but even he experiences the game not running perfectly despite having an RTX 5090: Stop gaslighting us and saying it’s not true when other games run well on the same hardware.

Some users are also speaking up about the PS5 version and asking for improvements. @theNYFrost (via x.com) reports stuttering and FPS drops in the console version.

The user @natedog10141 (via x.com) praises the game, but asks Pitchford not to ignore the criticism: It is so good, but just terribly optimized.

Nevertheless, Gearbox Entertainment is trying to further optimize the game with new updates. On September 13, 2025, a new update was released for PC that aims to provide stability improvements across a wide range of PCs.
