Star Trek becomes a bit more detailed with each new series, film, or other medium. Now a radio play has revealed what almost led to the death of a major villain.

What kind of radio play is this? The universe of Star Trek continues to expand and received a new audio play in 2025 that highlights an interesting period. It is called Star Trek: Khan and narrates in nine episodes what happened between the episode The Sleeping Tiger and the film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
The mentioned episode is from the original series with William Shatner as Captain Kirk and aired in 1967. The film, on the other hand, premiered in 1982 and continues the story of the villain Khan with the same cast. It is considered one of the best sci-fi films of all time.
At the end of The Sleeping Tiger, Khan was defeated by Kirk and exiled along with his followers to the planet Ceti Alpha V. There, they were supposed to spend their exile and ultimately die naturally.
However, that did not happen. The neighboring planet, Ceti Alpha VI, exploded just six months after the exile, rendering Ceti Alpha V virtually uninhabitable. Khan could have died, but thanks to his high intelligence, he managed to develop survival tactics. He survived for another 15 years before he managed to escape from the hostile planet.
During this time, an unbridled hatred for Kirk grew within Khan, who had left him behind. Khan believed that the captain of the Enterprise either knew about the instability of Ceti Alpha VI or was even responsible for the explosion.
A new episode of the audio play reveals: It was all different.
An unfortunate chain of events
What really happened? In episode 8 of the audio play, this is explored in more detail. The core of the planet Ceti Alpha VI was indeed unstable, but it would not have exploded on its own. However, a spaceship from the alien species of the Elboreans appeared near the planet.
At that moment, the ship’s drive had a malfunction, causing the crew to lose control. The leader Delmonda hastily ordered to discharge the excess energy onto the planet below. This led to the detonation of the unstable Ceti Alpha VI.
There were also consequences for the Elboreans: They crashed onto Ceti Alpha V and encountered Khan there. Delmonda formed an alliance with the villain, and they mutually helped each other survive on the planet. Among other things, they withdrew into freight containers to avoid exposure to the toxic atmosphere or deadly brain-eating eels. Delmonda only revealed in the mentioned episode 8 that their own spaceship had caused the destruction and devastation.
What does that mean for Khan? On one hand, Khan felt cheated because the Elboreans had not been honest from the start. On the other hand, Captain Kirk is also absolved of any guilt. He had nothing to do with the destruction and potential death of Khan. Khan’s immense rage is thus partly unfounded – only the fact that Kirk had abandoned him can still count as an argument.
