On December 11, 2025, Ashes of Creation will launch in Early Access on Steam. MeinMMO summarizes what you can expect from this early version, and what not.
How finished is the Early Access of Ashes of Creation? Currently, the MMORPG from Intrepid is in the third phase of Alpha Two. At some point in 2026, the game is expected to enter beta. There is currently no foreseeable time frame for a final release of Ashes of Creation.
For the Early Access version of Ashes of Creation, which starts on December 11, 2025, on Steam, this means: If you secure a Steam version of the game for 42 to 50 US dollars (there should be a small discount at launch) starting in December, you will land in an unfinished alpha, which is still many months away from reflecting the final player experience.
In the official announcement on ashesofcreation.com, the developers also warn:
Ashes of Creation is currently in the active alpha testing phase, which means many systems are still changing and may be subject to alterations. Testers should expect unstable builds, incomplete content, placeholder elements, and regular balance adjustments. If necessary, realm wipes will be performed to support testing and data collection.
The Early Access environment is deliberately kept raw and designed for iterations. It is more of a testing environment than a polished game. Participation in this phase is invaluable as we identify issues, evaluate performance, gather feedback, and strengthen the foundation of the game for future betas.
Since you are generally allowed to return a game on Steam only within 14 days of purchase and with a maximum of 2 hours of gameplay – which is far too little for an MMORPG – we will tell you below what content Ashes of Creation is expected to offer at the start of Early Access.
These contents are part of Early Access
- A large, open world with various biomes, beautiful locations, and an immersive atmosphere
- The two starting areas Riverlands and “The Anvils”
- Regions can be leveled through the nodes, settlements can be raised to level 4 (city), which affects available content as well as the appearance of the area
- In the world, you encounter all kinds of monsters, as well as small (instanced) and large (open) dungeons and dangerous world bosses
- A hybrid combat system with action and tab-target elements
- Access to 8 archetype classes that can take on different roles such as tank, healer, ranged, or frontliner, and which already have an exciting dynamic among themselves in group fights (Bard, Tank, Cleric, Fighter, Ranger, Mage, Rogue, Summoner)
- You can gather many resources and craft items – while the professions are interdependent, no one can build everything
- There are already a variety of PvP content such as caravans, changing PvP zones around special locations, or goods transport via sea routes combined with piracy
- A debut: the contents of the Harbinger update (with Summoner class, Harbinger Corruption event, people of Ren’Kai, mules, fishing on the open sea, and more)
- Through the monster coin system, you can loot coins during the event of the same name, which allow you to transform into monsters and, for example, take on the role of a raid boss.
- Bugs, performance issues, crashes, poor balancing… expect a variety of technical problems, this is an alpha
These contents are NOT part of Early Access yet
The following contents have been announced but are not yet part of the alpha version of Ashes of Creation:
- Max level 50 (currently, you can only level up to 25), likewise you cannot maximize the professions or acquire the best possible equipment, which are planned for the launch version
- Node upgrade level 5 (metropolis) and all associated content (such as raids and the final version of node sieges), as well as the different node types (economy, military, science, religion)
- Further visual variations (based on the different races of the game) for the node upgrade levels
- (Instanced) housing
- Kingdoms with king’s castles and the possibility of becoming the king or queen of a kingdom, including castle sieges
- The 8 class archetypes cannot yet be finally combined with each other
- Nodes, story arcs, and quests are still largely missing… the world may seem very empty (in April 2025, studio head Steven Sharif stated, that by then maybe 20 to 30 percent of the planned content is in the alpha)
So who is the Early Access worth it for?
In principle, for all interested parties for whom the current (and similarly paid) alpha phase has already been exciting. So for MMORPG enthusiasts who want to help shape a still unfinished game with potential into a polished and finished product by the official launch with their feedback and testing rounds.
However, if you are currently looking for a well-playable and fun alternative to the well-known MMORPGs, you should still avoid the Early Access of Ashes of Creation. The same goes for anyone who has no desire for PvP content or a sandbox structure. Ashes of Creation is neither a WoW nor a Final Fantasy XIV.
What else do I need to know about Ashes of Creation? Ashes of Creation is a sandbox MMORPG in a fantasy setting, set in a vast open world. You fight against world bosses and compete against each other in PvP. Additionally, there should be a system where you level areas, raise villages and towns, and change sections of the game world – the so-called “Nodes”. Development on the MMORPG began in 2015.
