There are indications on the Blizzard homepage that might point to a single-player campaign in Overwatch. So far, not much is known, but the rumor mill is churning.
Blizzard has indirectly announced a mysterious project on its official website with job listings. Those who want to apply for the job should have worked on a first-person game or an action-oriented game before.
Nobody knows anything concrete yet. What could these hints be about? The community is speculating that Blizzard is developing an Overwatch campaign, which will be playable as single-player and/or cooperatively.
Overwatch’s Jeff Kaplan has already announced that he yearns for a campaign for Overwatch.
“Everyone knows that Blizzard has a passion for storytelling, and we love to develop single-player and cooperative campaigns. You can see it in many of our games: StarCraft, Diablo, World of Warcraft. There is a lot of knowledge and passion in our studio when it comes to single-player content – or perhaps more likely for Overwatch… something cooperative. But we are by no means close to anything in that direction. It is a far-off thought for us at this point.” – Jeff Kaplan.
Since he made this remark, the Dr. Junkenstein Halloween event has already taken place. Here, players could complete various bosses with four players in a horde mode, fitting with a unique Halloween atmosphere. It was a scripted scenario, and without a doubt, Blizzard was testing the waters for campaign projects in the future.
Right from the very first trailer, Overwatch laid the groundwork for an interesting saga. Just the superpower glove “Doomfist” provides enough material for an exciting campaign. Because it’s not just about the glove itself, “Doomfist” is also the title of an anti-hero that Overwatch fought against a long time ago. The glove is also a payload that must be escorted in Numbani. It may sound a bit too powerful to imply a hero? But a final boss…
Whatever Blizzard is planning will probably take a while to materialize. For now, Overwatch has a few other big projects on the list for 2017. Like the Overwatch League, which aims to shake up esports, with fixed salaries and contracts for the players. Also, Season 3 won’t take long to arrive, and the new “Oasis” map should follow in the coming weeks. So the schedule for 2017 is likely already quite full. But 2018, who knows?
