The Game Director talks about the future of Overwatch and how it might eventually come to PvE content.
PvE in Overwatch – A case for Overwatch 2 or another game?
Although the hero shooter Overwatch has not even been released yet, Blizzard is already considering how the new franchise can move forward. The Game Director Jeff Kaplan revealed in an interview with Gameinformer that Overwatch could also focus on PvE content in the future – although not necessarily in the same game.
They plan to work properly on the “player vs. AI” mode for the shooter to reach a similar level as seen in Heroes of the Storm. There, players can queue individually or as a group to engage in some battles against computer-controlled enemies (bots).
But Kaplan reveals even more, weaving the story a little into the future, as the team is indeed interested in developing other content that players can face together.
“The idea of developing PvE content for Overwatch appeals to the developers, and we are eagerly waiting for an opportunity to do that. But whether that will be in the next Overwatch game or even in a completely different genre is still uncertain. We all really want to create PvE, but not in this game, not for the original offering of Overwatch, which is entirely focused on team-based hero action. It’s something we want to tackle eventually in another game.”
Either way, it seems that with Overwatch and the game’s world, there is still a long way to go.
Mein-MMO says: That the world of Overwatch definitely has potential for exciting stories can be seen not least in the captivating cinematics that have been released so far:
Whether it’s an action RPG, strategy title, or a shooter with a campaign, the world of Overwatch is already so rich and well thought out that there are seemingly endless possibilities to develop games and storylines from it. We are definitely looking forward to seeing that come to fruition in the coming years.
