The ranked system for Overwatch is live on PC. But when will PS4 and Xbox One follow? Where is the update?
Ranked system on consoles comes next week
As of last night, Overwatch has the competitive mode – at least on the PC version of the hero shooter. Players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, on the other hand, are left waiting, as they have not received a patch today. But why is that? Does Blizzard not care about console players?
Jeff Kaplan, the game director, provided a direct response in the official forum:
“First, we want our players to know that we cannot implement the competitive mode on all platforms simultaneously.
The patch is live on PC today, and players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One can expect the update sometime next week. We cannot give an exact date yet, but can confirm that the patch is going through the necessary approval steps.”
The issue with these patches is that Blizzard does not have the “final word” on when a patch can actually be released. First, the data must be verified by the respective console providers (namely Sony and Microsoft) before the patch is actually made available for download.
So there is still no specific date; console players will have to wait until next week to establish their “skill rating” and slowly but surely pave their way to the golden weapons.
For the future, Blizzard intends to try to align patch release dates on consoles and PCs.
“We know that this is not the ideal way to deliver new content, which is why we will improve our patch process in the coming months so that releases happen as simultaneously as possible across all platforms. Although the battle.net client allows us to be faster on PC, we hope to be able to release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One simultaneously in the future.”
