Not all Easter eggs in Overwatch are funny. The latest one has a very sad story.
Died in the Line of Duty for a Friend
Easter eggs have been part of video games since they have existed. However, not every Easter egg has an amusing story; sometimes they are sad. In the latest patch of Overwatch, the designs on some maps were changed, including on the map “Lijiang Tower”. On one of the space suits, a name and a saying can now be seen – in Chinese.
However, 宏宇 (Hongyu) is not a developer of the game, but rather an Overwatch fan who died a day before the release of the hero shooter.
The Chinese Hongyu Wu noticed someone trying to steal a classmate’s motorcycle and pursued him on his bicycle. During the chase, the two collided, and Hongyu suffered multiple brain hemorrhages. The perpetrator was caught, but Hongyu succumbed to his injuries shortly after in the hospital – at the young age of just 20. This was on May 23, 2016, exactly one day before the release of Overwatch – a game Hongyu was very excited about, as some friends quoted from chats with him.
Blizzard honored the fallen hero, who showed a high degree of civil courage, by immortalizing his name in the game, along with the Chinese words that translate to “heroes never die.”
Mein-MMO says: Overwatch is a game that has been spreading positive energy since its announcement and operates on the belief that everyone can become a hero. And Hongyu Wu was just such a “everyday hero,” who had to give his life for his brave attempt to prevent an injustice. An overall sad story with a beautiful tribute for digital eternity.
