An analysis of the statistics website Superdataresearch has shown that Overwatch, League of Legends (LoL) and World of Warcraft (WoW) are the absolute top earners in their respective segments. Read here how much money was exactly generated.
Overwatch sets one record after another. Because after Blizzard’s hero shooter already replaced Lol as the most popular game in the PC Bangs of South Korea, the game is now also the top earner in the PC gaming sector. According to the statistics page Superdataresearch, Overwatch generated over 269 million US dollars in revenue in May 2016.
Thus, it surpassed the struggling competitor game Battleborn by far; the Gearbox shooter MOBA only managed to reach 18 million US dollars. Curiously, Overwatch is significantly less successful on consoles, ranking “only” fifth, ahead of Uncharted 4, Black Ops 3, Fifa 16 and The Division.

WoW is still on top
Blizzard can also rejoice, as the cult MMORPG World of Warcraft is still the number one in terms of revenue in the subscription-based online role-playing game sector, despite declining player numbers. Thus, Blizzard’s MMORPG ranks ahead of the competition in the form of Lineage, Star Wars: The Old Republic and the Western version of TERA. Yes, here all MMOs that allow a subscription are grouped together, even if it is optional.
In the free-to-play MMOs, the MOBA League of Legends clearly leads the field and is significantly ahead of the rival Dota 2, which only made it to fifth place. Overall, the study also revealed that online games – such as The Division – are increasingly becoming successful on consoles. In contrast, subscription revenues from the PC market were expected to continue to decline and fell below the 200 million US dollar mark for the first time in May 2016.
All of these figures pertain to revenue from the “digital market”, meaning the games do not go through a physical storefront.
