Should certain heroes be banned in Overwatch for a match? A first tournament says: Yes, definitely.
Since Overwatch was released, the game has continually changed. In addition to numerous hero reworks, fresh heroes, new game modes, and of course plenty of cosmetic items, the Overwatch League was also introduced. This has increased interest in the Overwatch professionals.
However, in recent weeks, the matches – at least according to the fans’ feelings – have become significantly more boring. Therefore, a first tournament is now trying a banning system to break some strategies.
Why is Overwatch so rigid right now? The rise of the “Goats” strategy, where a team consists of 3 supporters and 3 tanks, has proven to be extremely effective. Many teams use this strategy, causing numerous matches to play out almost the same.
This bores players and viewers alike. The desire for change is there, and if Blizzard does not want to make nerfs or adjustments, it must be done by the players themselves.
A banning system could be one way to enforce some change.
First tournament bans one hero per team: The unofficial tournament “Tournament of Future Heroes,” hosted by the Dallas Fuel team, is using a banning system for the first time this weekend.
Before a match starts, both teams must name two heroes each. One that they want to ban and one that must not be banned at all. Only then will the matches be played under these rules.
Community discusses animatedly: The topic of hero banning has been a hotly debated issue in the community for a while now. Some players find it sensible because many games like League of Legends or other MOBAs also use such a system.
Other players believe that it has no place in Overwatch. After all, it is part of the game principle to keep changing heroes in between. Limiting the selection here would rob Overwatch of its uniqueness.
What is your opinion on a banning system in Overwatch? Is this a good step to bring more excitement back into the meta-game at high levels? Or does it simply have no place in Overwatch?
