Social media is probably the last place you want to learn about your dismissal. Yet, that seems to have happened to the Overwatch pro “Myunbong”.
Who is it about? Sang-min “Myunbong” Seo is 23 years old and last played a support role for the Overwatch team New York Excelsior. He played characters like Ana and Zenyatta.
Myunbong only joined the team in January 2022, after almost two years playing for Boston Uprising. But after just over half a year, it’s already over: NY Excelsior has parted ways with the 23-year-old.
However, Myunbong apparently found out about it only when everyone else already knew – via a tweet from his former team, which has over 130,000 followers on Twitter.
Big back and forth on Twitter about the Overwatch pro
The New York Excelsior (NYXL) team reportedly posted a farewell statement on Twitter, thanking Myunbong for his time with their team.
In response to the now-deleted post, Myunbong merely reacted with a question mark:
This raised the question in the comments of whether Myunbong even knew about his dismissal. Consequently, NYXL came back into the picture. Because apparently, this statement should not have been released yet.
They had posted the thank you statement to Myunbong but had failed to coordinate it properly with the team beforehand: “We take full responsibility, this is inexcusable,” the team wrote via Twitter.
NYXL also reached out directly to Myunbong: “We are very sorry for our miscommunication, and that we placed you in this situation. Although we wish it had been communicated better, we greatly appreciate your time with us and wish you only the best for the future.”
Myunbong himself later also spoke up on Twitter and explained that dismissal was a topic in a feedback session, but then it happened very suddenly.
“The sudden news, which was the result of an error by another department in the team, as well as the fact that I had not heard anything about the possibility of being dismissed, feels very unjustified. GL NYXL,” wrote Myunbong in his most recent tweet on the topic.
Why exactly this major miscommunication occurred is still unclear, just like the actual reasons for the separation. However, Myunbong is no longer listed on the active roster page of the team – the farewell seems to be final.
It is not the first time that strange situations arise around Overwatch. Another example: A few weeks ago, a setup for a large tournament in Overwatch caused confusion.
