The charity campaign of Overwatch is over. Blizzard was able to donate more than 12 million dollars for breast cancer research – all thanks to “Mercy in Pink.”
Several weeks ago, we reported that there was a very special Mercy skin in Overwatch. This “Mercy in Pink” could only be purchased with real money – however, the amount did not remain with Blizzard. All proceeds were donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (“BCRF”). In total, over 12 million dollars were raised.
How much money was raised? Just from the sale of skins in the game, 12.7 million US dollars were raised worldwide. This is approximately 10.8 million Euros. This is the largest donation ever made in a year by a corporate partner to the BCRF.
The Mercy skin was only available for 2 weeks. The “Mercy in Pink” skin is no longer available. It was only available for a short time, from May 8th to May 21st, in the Blizzard shop for around €15. Whether it will ever be available again is questionable. But maybe Blizzard will repeat this campaign in the coming years – it clearly was worth it.
The check was personally handed over during a ceremonial event by Game Director Jeff Kaplan and Michael Morhaime. The funds should help advance important research in the field of breast cancer and its prevention.
