Leavers ruin the fun of ranked mode in Overwatch. A patch was supposed to fix this, but it somehow didn’t work.
A patch that doesn’t patch the right thing
One of the most annoying moments in Overwatch is when, after a hard-earned victory in ranked mode, you are awarded few or even no ranking points because at the last moment a player from the opposing team leaves the match. Blizzard has been trying to address this issue for weeks and yesterday deployed a new patch to fix it.
In the official forum, Jeff Kaplan (Game Director of Overwatch) explained why this problem occurred in the first place. A system determines the win chances of both teams based on the ranks and MMR of the players and tries to create a fair match. When a player leaves the match afterwards, the win chance of that team logically drops drastically, which results in a lesser change in ranking points. However, this system encourages many to leave the games prematurely in true troll fashion to “get back at” the winning team. To discourage this behavior further, the reduction of ranking point gain should now be removed.
The embarrassing part: The patch didn’t fix the issue!
Apparently, Blizzard assumed that the patch would eliminate this annoyance, but that didn’t work. The developers are now feverishly working to fix the bug in the bug fix. So, a patch that patches the patch is to be expected soon.
