Tied matches in Overwatch are annoying. Soon this should be a thing of the past.
Although Overwatch is one of the most successful shooters ever, even nearly a year after its release, there are still a lot of issues that the game suffers from. For many players, it’s quite a thorn in their side that it is possible to achieve a “tie” in competitive mode at all. This is also the case for user RedPanda, who wrote in the official forum:
“I would rather be steamrolled than waste another 20 minutes of my life trying to earn a tie. Maybe I’m the only one who thinks this, but they happen way too often. (…)
Yeah, I know I still get XP, but I don’t care. It just feels terrible when you fight so hard and the game at the end says ‘It didn’t matter.’
Jeff Kaplan quickly responded and explained:
“We have some changes coming to the PTR soon. These changes will dramatically reduce the number of tied matches. More details will be available very soon.”
How exactly Blizzard wants to reduce the number of ties in Overwatch is still unknown. It could be possible to simply take the time of the “faster” team in the case of a tie to determine the winner. In the end, we’ll probably have to wait for details.
Later, Kaplan added that the changes should also help in “Capture the Flag” and “Elimination” modes, even though these are not part of competitive play. Apparently, Blizzard is generally unhappy with a “tie.”
Jeff Kaplan refers to himself as “a middle-aged nerd without charisma”.
