Overwatch New Hero: Athena – The Omnic Support
Another popular theory among fans is that Athena will become a playable character. Athena, the computer voice that explains to Winston day by day what he should do and what to avoid – at least when it comes to his physical and mental health. In an early concept drawing of the Overwatch heroes, there is an Omnic who could fit the description of Athena. He has an elegant, feminine figure and also has the same symbol on the forehead that Athena otherwise uses to operate from the computer.
For an AI as powerful as Athena (after all, she has all the data of all Overwatch agents), it makes sense to also give her a body to be able to manually secure everything if necessary. Anyone who has played Mass Effect 3 and recalls EDI will surely understand that such a concept has its charm and could enable a pretty decent character.
Cortyn says: I personally think Athena is not very likely, as she is already the “neutral” announcement voice in the game. If she now gets her own character who has the same voice, it could lead to confusion. On the other hand, it would be pretty cool if a character announces the “double kill” and then asks their own team, “Which side are you on?”
