The new Overwatch cinematic sheds light on Mei’s backstory. And it’s quite dark.
At the last Gamescom in 2016, Blizzard already presented a cinematic for Overwatch. At that time, it was “The Last Bastion” and showcased the backstory of the eponymous character.
Again in 2017, there is a cinematic from the Cologne Game Fair. Just moments ago, Blizzard unveiled the latest chapter “Winter Awakening”. It revolves around the arctic researcher Mei.
During a particularly strong storm, Mei’s research team decides to spend some time in cryosleep to conserve energy and wait out the storm. When Mei awakens, she quickly realizes a terrible fact: she hasn’t been asleep for just a few hours, but for 9 whole years!
But there’s more. All the other scientists have died in their cryopods. Mei and her robot Snowfall are the last inhabitants of the research facility. With dwindling energy reserves and a still persistent storm, Mei faces difficult decisions.
Among other things, she develops her weapon in this emergency situation, which she needs to repair the transmission tower and send the collected data from 9 years. Because apparently, the world is facing another climate catastrophe that can still be averted – if the data falls into the right hands.
Cortyn says: Blizzard has an incredible talent for conveying so many emotions in just 10 minutes. I won’t hide the fact that the video brought tears to my eyes again – for several reasons. It is sad yet beautiful and as always with the Overwatch message: There is hope. Hats off, Blizzard. And now, please, more cinematics and faster!
What do you think of this new cinematic? Does Mei now stand in a different light for you? Or is she still the most annoying character in all of Overwatch?
