Overwatch creates bizarre moments due to the free hero selection at times. For example, when I had to face a team of six Meis with my team!
Mei, the adorable polar explorer, is one of the most controversial heroines from Overwatch. Some find her completely useless and a waste of space, while others swear by the cute Chinese character, and some even find her totally OP and would like to see her nerfed into the ground! For my part, I can’t do much with Mei, as her gameplay doesn’t suit me. However, I will never underestimate Mei again after the following experience!
They are everywhere!
Since Overwatch was released, there hasn’t been a day when I haven’t played a few hours of Blizzard’s hero shooter with my friends in the evening. We have become a good team and play well together. However, a few days ago, our endurance was severely tested, as there was constantly a Mei somewhere, separating our team with ice blocks and eliminating individual members in isolation.
No matter how many of the little fur bundles we shot down, new ones kept coming. Eventually, one of us looked at the team list, and indeed: The whole damn enemy team consisted of Meis! To understand what we experienced in the next few minutes, you have to live it – I believe. But I will still try to convey it somehow and overcome this trauma.
CC Cold Shock Trauma
Yes, I consciously write trauma. Because there is hardly anything more annoying in a competitive online game than being hindered by CC effects when you are desperately mashing the keys, but your character no longer responds. Often, you can only watch helplessly as you are chewed up by the opponent.
This is incredibly frustrating. Especially when you are constantly held up by something in CC, since Mei can do nothing else but stop and slow down the opponent. Whenever a Mei was in range, we would slow down and freeze in place. And even if one or two of them were affected, there was always a third Mei around to execute our now frozen heroes with icicle headshots. Icy cold revenge, so to speak!
Winter is coming!
Almost more frustrating was Mei’s defensive ability. Because when we finally took one of them under fire, it often happened that the beast simply encased itself in an ice block and became invulnerable while weathering our attacks. Losing what we thought was a sure kill was even more frustrating than being stuck in CC. Of course, then her sisters would come rushing in and frost us again with ice.
But the peak of horror was the moment when we wanted to defend a point, and several Meis simultaneously activated their ultimates, turning a huge area into an icy death trap. I still get chills down my spine today when I think about it.
We fought fiercely against the Mei flood for several rounds, and only through extreme effort could we ultimately win by a narrow margin. But due to the extremely stressful abilities of the Meis, this was the hardest-earned victory in my Overwatch career so far.
That’s it for my WTF moment in Overwatch. And now that I’ve been able to write about it, it’s kind of funny. Has anything like this happened to you before? Let us know and write it in the comments!
