An almost unknown team is knocking out the pros in the Overwatch tournaments with quite strange strategies.
Thanks to the many characters and different possibilities, Overwatch always has the potential for exciting moments and unexpected tactics – at least in theory. In practice, however, a meta has established itself among the pros, where certain combinations of characters are considered essential. Popular combos like 2/2/2 (2 tanks, 2 healers, 2 DPS) or 3/2/1 (3 tanks, 2 healers, 1 DPS) can be seen repeatedly in the tournaments. Basically, it’s about waiting for an error from the others or finally breaking through that one bottleneck.
However, at the current APEX Overwatch tournament in South Korea, there is a team that doesn’t give a penny about all these things and simply doesn’t adhere to the “rules”. The team “Meta Athena” continually competes with unexpected team combinations in the second Apex season, even bringing 3 snipers in an offensive – that’s right. Exactly that, where you already hear insults that start with “Your mother” in quick match.
But Meta Athena is making quite an impact with these unusual tactics. Among the defeated enemies lie also major teams like EnVyUs.
One reason for Meta Athena’s success is their relentless aggression. Where other teams would briefly retreat, Meta Athena simply continues the assault to overwhelm the enemy. That they also play damn well goes without saying.
But the “3 sniper tactic” is not the only thing that makes Meta Athena special. All the defenses of the opponent don’t matter when the enemy team attacks from the “wrong” side.
Whenever an opponent has prepared for Meta Athena, the team comes up with a new, crazy tactic. That’s why Meta Athena has also become a fan favorite – an underdog that is now on a winning streak.
