Overwatch is graphically at a high level. However, one small detail does not fit the picture: the lip synchronization of the heroes.
Blizzard has not only created its own universe with Overwatch but also built its own engine from the ground up. They have placed great importance on ensuring that the animations appear convincing and that various objects – such as capes, cloaks, hair, and other things – do not “clip” into each other. However, there is a pretty big detail that many players find bothersome: the lack of lip synchronization.
On Reddit, the user churrumino56 explained that he originally came from Team Fortress 2, which is based on the Source engine. Although it has aged by now, it revolutionized lip synchronization in games. He finds it absolutely incomprehensible why Overwatch has so many cool voice lines and text passages (for example, at the start of the game in the spawn room), yet the characters’ faces remain as stiff as in the worst moments of Mass Effect: Andromeda.
For the characters in Overwatch, the lips do not move at all, which simply feels out of place for a game of this caliber.
The post received over 10,000 upvotes and found plenty of support in the comments. People hope that Blizzard will implement a code in the future that makes the heroes a bit more realistic, so that this problem will soon be a thing of the past.
Interestingly, the characters do have facial animations. When they shoot, get hit, or use their abilities, they make grimaces or show clear signs of pain. However, why they cannot part their lips when speaking remains a mystery that only the developers can solve.
