According to Jeff Kaplan, they are working on “many secret things” in Overwatch – including new game modes and fresh heroes!
Since BlizzCon, there has been little new information about Overwatch, apart from some new skins for the Winter Wonderland event. In the official forums, fans express their frustration that Blizzard has communicated so little about what the developers are currently working on.
Jeff Kaplan then responded with a big “Sorry!”.
Developers are experimenting wildly: According to Kaplan, they used the short holiday period around Thanksgiving in the USA to let all developers work on “whatever they want to work on”.
The results of this are “pretty cool”. They have tried new game modes, new features, and new “engine tech”. Everything is in a rough state, but some of these prototypes will later become game modes.
Hard work, little communication: The reason for the lack of communication in recent weeks is also that they currently want to “get a lot done” and are very focused on work. Although there are no major announcements yet, the development team is strongly focused on pushing things forward.
A lot of secret stuff: In a somewhat joking manner, Kaplan ended his post with a list of what the developers are currently working on, without getting too specific.
- Super secret stuff he can’t talk about
- Hero balance, even though they think they’re currently doing quite well
- “Quality of Life” improvements, such as to the user interface
- Prototypes for new heroes and their development
- Prototypes for new game modes (don’t expect those too soon)
- Development of new features
- Ongoing event support (skins, emotes, etc.)
- Even more secret stuff he can’t talk about
- Super secret stuff he shouldn’t talk about
In summary, a lot is probably being done right now, but little of it can be announced. Overwatch fans will have to wait a bit longer. However, the Winter Wonderland event is about to start to bridge the information drought.
