The ranked system of Overwatch is suffering from players who leave a match – even if they quickly return.
The problem with “leavers” – no progress for anyone
No matter how you look at it, the ranked system of Overwatch currently has a lot of problems. Many players are frustrated because different mechanics ensure that you do not get a full victory credited, despite a good round.
The biggest problem right now is the “leavers”, that is, players who leave a match prematurely. Why is this so serious? The current system ensures that leaving a game early massively reduces the rank gain for all other players.
A small example: Team A has a lower skill rating than Team B, but still manages to achieve a fantastic victory in the first round. Someone on Team B is so disappointed that they leave the game early. With one player less, Team B cannot beat Team A – Team A wins. However, even though Team A has won against a (according to skill rating) stronger team, they only receive a few rank points credited. This punishes teams that perform particularly well, but also everyone who simply has the misfortune of playing against “rage quitters”.
But that’s not all. If a player disconnects from the game (for example, due to a disconnect) and then rejoins the match, they receive a defeat – regardless of whether their team wins. Who temporarily loses connection to the game is guaranteed to lose rank points. This means that people are unlikely to return after a disconnect because the game is already lost for them personally.
No wonder that many players are currently fed up with the ranked system and vent their frustration in the forums.
However, Jeff Kaplan has reacted: A patch is supposed to come this week that will fix many problems with the “leavers”. While it won’t remove all difficulties yet, further patches are already planned. However, no specific date has been mentioned yet.
