In Korea, cheating in Overwatch is much easier. The reason is the PC Bangs.
When looking at the various forums with Korean Overwatch players, complaints against cheaters and fraudsters who are causing trouble on the local servers are increasing. More and more players threaten – admittedly, a bit weakly – “Do something about all the cheaters or we will stop playing”.
On Reddit, a corresponding post has received over 12,700 upvotes – one of the highest-rated posts of all time.
For Blizzard, however, it is difficult to curb cheaters there, as the accounts work differently. Most players play from internet cafes, called “PC Bangs”. Here, one must log in with their own account, but the Overwatch license is located on the internet cafe’s computer.
This leads to the situation where players in Korea simply create an American account repeatedly to log in at the PC Bangs and cheat to their heart’s content. If they get banned, they just create a new account. If the achievements like skins and voicelines don’t matter, the loss of the account is easy to bear.
It is clear, however, that honest players in Korea are slowly but surely losing their patience. For them, fraudsters are a massive problem that plagues almost every game.
So far, Blizzard has remained silent on the issue. Many players fill the gap with theories: Blizzard doesn’t care whether the players cheat there, as long as they can collect the licensing fees from the PC Bangs.
