Heroes in Overwatch often have multiple tasks and can fulfill multiple roles. In the future, there should be more “pure” heroes.
Looking at the release of the latest Overwatch heroes, it seems that Blizzard is placing a significant focus on hybrid heroes. Moira, for example, is a support character. However, her abilities also deal substantial damage or are even suitable for flanking.
The release of Brigitte was a nuisance for many players. No character in Overwatch embodies the “jack of all trades” quite like Brigitte Lindholm. She not only deals solid damage at close and medium range with her flail, but also heals her allies, grants them armor, and can even act as a “mini-tank,” allowing individual players to seek protection behind her shield.
More “pure heroes” in the future
In an interview with PCGamesN, lead designer Geoff Goodman revealed that in the future, not only new hybrid characters will be released. There will also be “pure” heroes, i.e., those with a clearly defined role (DPS, Tank, Support), making a comeback.
Goodman stated:
“The most important thing is that we always want to offer a lot of different options for players to experiment with. Sometimes that means more hybrid heroes like Brigitte, Zenyatta, or Roadhog, and sometimes it means more heroes with a ‘pure’ role, like Mercy, Reinhardt, or McCree. I think it’s very likely that we will see both more hybrid heroes and ‘pure’ heroes.”
Symmetra has faced this issue as well. Although classified as a “support” hero, she cannot heal – a clear breach for many players that needs to be addressed. Therefore, a comprehensive Symmetra rework is on the way.
What do you think of the hybrid heroes in Overwatch? Should there be more characters that don’t fit into a clear role? Or should the role assignment for each hero be clear-cut?
Reworks are also planned for the hero Hanzo – which has driven fans to make a strange demand.
