The current ranking system of Overwatch was a mistake. This is not just our opinion, but it was stated by Game Director Jeff Kaplan himself.
“In Overwatch, a skill rating of 60 is already extremely good”
A lot of work has gone into the ranked mode of Overwatch, and recently further changes have been made. However, the ranking system is still under heavy criticism, as many players do not want to be “assessed with their team”. This is particularly frustrating when players believe they deserve a higher rank than they actually have.
Jeff Kaplan addressed this in a long interview with Kotaku, admitting that the ranking system in its current presentation was a mistake:
“We realize that the percentage system was a mistake. Our system ranges from 1 to 100. I grew up in North America, and anything below an 80 was not good. I never wanted to have less than 80 [points] in school. I always wanted scores in the 90s, and if you were in the 60s, you might not have even passed. In our system, now that the dust has settled, it turns out that a player with a skill rating of 60 is already extremely good.”
Mein-MMO says: At least in Germany, an assessment of exams is usually not accompanied by a percentage indication. Nevertheless, one can well understand the frustration of many players who feel “bad” with a rank in the range of 50-60, even though they actually belong to the better half. It remains to be seen what Blizzard has planned for the future. We will probably experience further changes to this game mode next month when the first season ends.
