Overwatch is just around the corner. But will the game also be released for Mac OS X devices?
Mac users miss out on Overwatch
The early access for the Overwatch beta is just around the corner. While all users of PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and a Windows PC can soon join the cheerful shooting, a very specific group of gamers is left out: The Mac users. As of now, Overwatch is not being developed for Mac OS X devices (Apple iMac, MacBook, etc.).
Even during the beta, this became apparent, as the official FAQ answered the question of whether “Mac users can also play” with a clear “No” – there was no beta for Mac. Nothing is mentioned about “sometime” or “later”; it simply does not seem to be the plan.
In an interview with pcgamesn.com, Jeff Kaplan from Blizzard commented on this topic, namely a possible Mac version for Overwatch.
“[The decision against Mac] was the result of not receiving the technical support we would need to make the game work well on Mac.” Furthermore, he stated that “the enthusiasm from Sony and Microsoft is overwhelming to have Overwatch on their platforms” – something that Apple probably does not experience.
The only solution to this problem, Kaplan sees, is if Mac users bring this issue to Apple’s attention. “I think Apple is a great company. And I hope that Mac gamers will reach out to Apple and make it clear that gaming on a Mac is an important issue for many.”
However, there is a possible way: booting Windows on the Mac and then playing Overwatch from there. This requires a Windows license and is probably not the most elegant solution.
