Is it worth saving Loot Boxes in Overwatch ? Jeff Kaplan explains how and when loot is generated.
Old Boxes, Old Loot
Overwatch, Blizzard’s hero shooter, had a pretty impressive launch. To keep it that way in the long term, the developers want to regularly release new content in the form of maps, heroes, and cosmetic upgrades. This raised the question of whether it might be smarter to accumulate loot boxes now to open them after the release of new skins. After all, anyone who already has a lot of skins will often get duplicates or triplicates, which then only grant 1/5 of the price as credits.
But is it worth collecting the boxes? Jeff Kaplan, the game director, gave a clear answer: No, collecting is not worth it! The content of a loot box is generated at the moment players receive their loot box – that is, when they level up or make a purchase. Consequently, it doesn’t make any sense to hold on to loot boxes for a long time or “save” them for future updates. The items in the respective boxes are already determined and will not be influenced by future content patches.
It is still unknown whether future skins can also be purchased specifically with credits – but there is currently nothing to suggest otherwise.
When will there be new skins in Overwatch?
Additionally, Blizzard at least provided a rough date for when players can expect new items. In the official forum, user SevenMD asked: “When will we get the first batch of new skins? I am itching to get some cool new stuff to play with.”
Jeff Kaplan’s brief and very direct answer: “This summer.” So by September at the latest, we should already enjoy new cosmetic items.
