Many players have already gotten used to the heroes from Overwatch – but perhaps unfairly. At some point, heroes could meet their demise.
The heroes of Overwatch have slowly but surely won the hearts of players over the years. Whether it’s the lively Tracer, the “Edgelord” Reaper, or the caring Mercy – the bond between players and characters is strong.
At least in the near future, fans don’t have to worry about the survival of their characters. In a Q&A with representatives of the press, Game Director Jeff Kaplan spoke about some aspects of the Overwatch story. It was mentioned that while Blizzard strives to fill the past of Overwatch with lore, there is currently very little information available about Overwatch.
Kaplan assured that some major lore information will be released soon to better connect the story. However, the team has to “earn” big moments first.
As an example, Kaplan mentioned the killing of a beloved Overwatch character. If that were to happen now, it wouldn’t carry much significance for most players as they don’t know enough about the characters yet.
Developers often discuss the death of Overwatch heroes
The colleagues from Kotaku then inquired further, wanting to know if Blizzard would really ever permanently kill an Overwatch character. According to Kaplan, the developers discuss this almost every day.
“Can we kill a character? If we kill a character, which one would it be?”
Kaplan considers this possible in the future but reassures: If a character were to die in the lore, they would still be playable in Overwatch. There are no plans to remove existing heroes from the game “just” because they die in the lore.
The lore of Overwatch is already full of death and tragedy, although this has only affected the surroundings of the characters and never the heroes themselves. For example, Gerard, Widowmaker’s husband (by her own hand), and also Mei lost all her colleagues in the field.
Which heroes could you most easily do without in the lore? Who is closest to death story-wise?
You can often die in “Revenge” – it’s really tough on the highest difficulty!
