Golden Weapons – 300 Wins for a Gun?
The feedback from the previous test realm of Overwatch was generally quite positive. Only minor complaints have come in because players are not satisfied with the mechanics of the coin toss and Sudden Death in the ranked mode. Another point of criticism is the rate at which one can earn golden weapons. Currently, these weapons cost 300 “Ranked Points” and earning this currency is quite laborious. You only get a measly point for a win, while you get nothing for a loss. For many players, this means that a lot of time must be invested if they want to enjoy a golden weapon cosmetically.
Jeff Kaplan, the Game Director of Overwatch, has commented on this in the official forum and clarified:
“Golden weapons are quite expensive. But remember, players get a lot of Ranked Points at the end of the season. The “1 point per win” rule is not the way we think you will earn these weapons. Currently, the system is balanced in such a way that the best players immediately get a golden weapon at the end of the season, while the rest of us have to earn it over a longer period of time.”
Even though he does not mention specific numbers, it can be assumed that the best players will be credited at least 300 points at the end of the season. Those who are not among the most successful players (almost everyone) must either save points over several seasons or play a really high number of games to flaunt the golden guns.
In the future, there will also be a minor change to Roadhog’s golden weapon. This hero will be allowed to present his hook in golden color in the future. However, this will likely be added later in the summer.
