The Overwatch Contenders team from Philadelphia Fusion, Fusion University, had to compete in the semifinals and finals of the first season wearing plain black T-shirts this weekend. Their official T-shirts were banned by the authorities, presumably because the inscription “FU” was considered too risky.
This weekend, viewers of the finals of the first season of Overwatch Contenders were puzzled: The team from Philadelphia Fusion, Fusion University, appeared in the semifinals and finals in plain black T-shirts instead of their team jerseys.
Jerseys were “too hot” for the authorities
What happened? Philadelphia Fusion shared on Twitter this weekend that the authorities of Overwatch Contenders banned the jerseys of Fusion University. A possible reason given was the “risky” inscription FU for Fusion University, which can also be read as “Fuck You”.
How did Fusion University react? Also via Twitter, the staff of Philadelphia Fusion mocked the decision. Some memes poked fun at the ban on the shirts. Additionally, a sale for the affected jerseys was announced.
However, subtle criticism was also expressed: The CFO of Philadelphia Fusion, Joe Marsh, posted a four-part meme to highlight the league’s double standards. While jerseys with the “FU” inscription were banned, the Houston Outlaws player CoolMatt is allowed to wear the player number 69, which also refers to a sexual practice.
Officially approved by Blizzard is also the belt buckle of Overwatch hero Jesse McCree. It reads the abbreviation “BAMF”, which stands for “Badass Motherfucker”. The belt buckle is not just a small detail but is even highlighted in a highlight intro.
However, Fusion University did not let itself be dissuaded by all the fuss about their jersey: The team managed to win the final 4-1 against Toronto.
