With a new console, the question arises for Overwatch : Will Blizzard’s hero shooter also be released on the Switch?
Recently, Jeff Kaplan held an AMA on the Overwatch subreddit, where the community bombarded the Game Director with all sorts of questions. In addition to queries about balancing, game design, and community fan creations, there were also discussions about the future of Overwatch and whether the game would be released on other platforms.
Particularly the Nintendo Switch was in high demand, as Nintendo’s new console is currently very popular. User Nessuno_IM asked if they would take on the challenge of developing Overwatch for the Switch. Jeff Kaplan responded:
“I love the Switch! My second favorite gaming platform of all time is the 3DS. Bringing Overwatch to the Switch is quite challenging for us. But we are always open when it comes to exploring new platforms [for our game].”
Although this is not a concrete promise, it sounds like Blizzard is at least considering targeting a port for the new Nintendo console. Perhaps there are internal discussions about how feasible this would be and whether the associated effort would even be worth it.
Overwatch was planned from the very beginning as a “multi-platform title,” even before contracts with Sony and Microsoft (for PS4 and Xbox One) were signed. According to Kaplan, these were only signed shortly before the official announcement for the console version.
Kaplan also reveals in the AMA that he is quite enthusiastic about the Switch. He is currently playing a lot of “Zelda: Breath of the Wild” and even describes the game as a masterpiece. (By the way, our Leya shares this opinion in her preview report)
