The revenue from Overwatch is astonishing. Nearly 270 million dollars in just one week.
Overwatch – From Zero to Hero(shooter)
By now, there are hardly any people online who do not at least have a rough idea of what Overwatch is. Blizzard’s hero shooter was underestimated by many and then hit like a bomb. After Blizzard recently announced that it had surpassed the 10 million players mark, the analysts at SuperData have now released part of the May report, which provides even more insights into the sales success. Thus, Overwatch (on PC, PS4, and Xbox One combined) alone made nearly 269 million dollars in May. Overwatch contributed significantly to the fact that the volume of the PC market for digital titles increased by a remarkable 8% in May.
While the game hardly received any recognition during the closed beta in livestreams, it reached fifth place among the most popular streaming titles after its release.
Overwatch leaves Battleborn far, far behind
Only in direct comparison with other games does it become truly clear how strong Overwatch has proven to be as a sales title. The comparison with Battleborn, which was often treated as a rival to Overwatch, makes this evident.
Overwatch’s 269 million dollars in revenue can only be countered by Battleborn with “only” 18 million dollars. This by no means indicates that Battleborn is a failure, but it only shows that Overwatch plays in a completely different league, in which no one can keep up so quickly.
This is especially impressive when considering that Overwatch was only released towards the end of the month, on May 24. The figures for the coming months will be particularly interesting when one can estimate how much the game takes in solely from the sale of loot boxes.
