For the fanfiction community of Overwatch it is a heavy blow. Another romance has been quashed by Blizzard.
Although Blizzard only revealed relatively sparse details about the story at the launch of Overwatch, it didn’t take long for the community to take the reins themselves. Many stories have been woven around the heroes and villains. Particularly enticing are romantic combinations between the heroes. Tracer and Widowmaker, Genji and Mercy, and many other combinations have been told in fanfictions by the hundreds.
However, one of the most popular and likely theories revolved around Pharah. Her mother is the sharpshooter Ana, who was long thought to be missing. After she reappeared and received some voicelines, the community was immediately on the trail of a “very hot thing.” Did the happy family consist of mother Ana, daughter Pharah, and father Reinhardt?
The fans of this theory must be very brave now, as the Lead Writer Michael Chu, who is primarily responsible for the backstories of the characters, addressed this question in a Q&A session.
“Oh, that is a popular question and I don’t think I’ve ever answered it. I could take the easy way out and give a vague answer here. But I’ll just say it: No. Reinhardt is not Pharah’s father. I mean, that still leaves quite a few other people to consider. But there are some clues!”
Since then, fans have feverishly searched the entire game for the missing key to who Pharah’s father is – it seems like Reinhardt will remain single. But a true knight should not be bound as long as there are fair maidens in distress, right?
Soon the 24th hero will be on the agenda in Overwatch, as the Doomfist has been stolen!
