Symmetra is one of the original heroes from Overwatch. By now, the Indian has even been reworked from a healer to a DPS hero. However, this has only moderately contributed to an image change: Even now, Symmetra players still have to hear that they are playing with a noob hero.
The Symmetra Controversy: The reworked Symmetra has been playable in the Overwatch rankings since July 10. Opinions about her have been divided since then – some players, however, complain that she is still not recognized.
The new Symmetra – better or worse?
Since Symmetra became playable in the rankings, she is played on PC across all ranks in less than 1% of matches but wins over 54% of the matches played (via Overbuff).
Thus, Symmetra is statistically the second strongest hero after Brigitte.
Players complain about hate: Before Symmetra got a rework, she was considered a “noob hero” and a “troll pick”. Her automatic targeting and the turrets allowed her to get easy kills without requiring much skill, but she was also very easy to counter.
Some Symmetra mains have spoken out since her rework (via Kotaku). Despite her completely new abilities and the new role she apparently fulfills well, they are still insulted or not recognized as DPS players. Some players even report that they were told to kill themselves for their main hero.
Nothing has changed: Such things have also happened before she was reworked. Symmetra mains have been reported just for playing Symmetra, leading to bans.
Blizzard actually wanted to prevent such things, but apparently it hasn’t worked.
Some players even criticize Blizzard itself. By reworking Symmetra, they have clearly told former players that there is no place for such a playstyle and thus for them in Overwatch.
There is also positive feedback: However, not all reactions from other players to the new Symmetra and her mains are negative. With the new abilities she has been equipped with, she can finally have a real impact on a game.
There is even more or more recognition for the playstyle – albeit with an undertone of frustration that a Symmetra player is so good.
The community is more relaxed
Whether the impression of Symmetra players is really accurate cannot be definitively confirmed. In the forums, there are hardly any or no posts about alleged harassment just for being a Symmetra player. Complaints from Symmetra players are rare in the forums.
Here, the discussion is more about whether her new abilities are good enough and how to use them most effectively. There are even outliers that label Symmetra as too strong, while most voices find her “okay” by now.
