In Overwatch experience will soon cost the same amount at each level – but is this good or bad?
Currently, a new patch is being tested in Overwatch. This not only brings massive nerfs for some characters but also a fundamental change to the game’s XP system.
So far, in Blizzard’s hero shooter, levels 1-23 require fewer experience points than all other levels – the value steadily increases until it reaches its maximum of 21,000 experience points at level 24. Once a character reaches level 100 and earns their first “promotion”, this maximum is reset, allowing levels 101-123 to be completed relatively quickly.
Since every level-up is rewarded with a loot box, this led players to quickly reach “the next 100” before the Halloween event and then wait for the event to start. This way, they could quickly grab some special loot boxes to acquire the coveted new skins.
In the future, every level after the first promotion will cost 20,000 experience points. The total amount needed to level up from 101 to 200 remains nearly unchanged, but the initial levels now take significantly longer.
Cortyn says: I’m not entirely sure whether I find the changes good or bad. At least I agree with the developers, as I also aimed for level 100 before events to grab “easy loot boxes” during the event. However, some of the joy of leveling up is lost when every level is now the same and thus interchangeable. Ultimately, it may be a good step, even if it seems annoying at first glance.
