To get an Overwatch license for the PlayStation 4 market, Blizzard really pulled a fast one on Sony. We will tell you what happened.
The development of Overwatch is full of anecdotes and funny stories, such as the Jetpack Cat that was once supposed to be a hero. But in the tough world of business and contracts, the developers of Overwatch also have interesting details to share.
In an interview with the moderators from the Overwatch subreddit, the Game Director of Overwatch, Jeff Kaplan, and Lead Software Designer Bill Warnecke talked about the development phase of Overwatch.
In particular, it was about whether the game was originally planned for PS4 and Xbox One. Officially at least not, because a corresponding contract with Sony was only negotiated in a late stage of development.
However, the truth was completely different. In the interview, Jeff Kaplan revealed that Overwatch had been planned for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One “from day one”. Moreover, the game was even developed and optimized directly for it. Even before there was any negotiation with Sony, the game was already running smoothly on the PlayStation 4.
When they had the bosses from Sony in the house to finalize a development contract for the PlayStation 4, the developers had to hide the PlayStation 4 and the controllers according to their own statements. They then tried to convince the Sony staff that it would be “very much, very hard work” to get Overwatch running on the PS4.
The plan obviously worked out, as Overwatch runs on PC, PS4, and Xbox One with great success.
What do you think about it? Just a joke that harmed no one or really a form of deception?
Have you seen the discussions about the next tank? It could come from Talon …
