Overwatch launched without the ranked play mode. But when will it be added? Jeff Kaplan gives an initial assessment.
Ranked Play will be released early in the summer
Last night, Overwatch celebrated its release on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. However, hardcore fans are frustrated that the game initially only features “Quick Play” and “Brawl,” which are two game modes where the play is rather casual and fun is the main focus. Those who want to compete against other players must either organize their own tournaments or wait until the ranked play mode is implemented.
But when will that actually be?
In a recent developer update before the patch, Jeff Kaplan, the Game Director of Overwatch, addressed some questions from the community and at least gave an initial forecast. Accordingly, the first major patch of Overwatch will definitely include the ranked play mode, which is currently a top priority for Blizzard.
Even though Kaplan does not want to commit to a date, as it is still unclear how much work needs to be put into it, a rough estimate has been set for mid to late June.
Since the closed beta, there have already been some changes to the ranked play mode, which is currently being tested internally. A match should now less frequently be decided by “Sudden Death,” but if it is, it should be directly related to the chosen game mode. Also new is the duration of a season. Previously, they were supposed to last only one month, but now around 10 weeks with a short “break” between seasons is planned.
