China is bringing out a new Overwatch copy. Bet you have seen the characters somewhere else before?
It’s an old hat that successful concepts and game ideas are often copied in China. Nevertheless, it is always surprising how brazen some developers go and use the ideas from other game studios. Now there is a new mobile shooter in China called “Hero Mission.” Just a glance at the game logo might make you skeptical, as it strongly resembles the Overwatch symbol.
Once you get into the game, you realize the full extent of the copy. Character abilities and their appearance have been largely taken over, with only minor changes to the design.
Want a few examples?
Widowmaker has kept her purple color scheme, a sniper rifle, a sexy outfit, and of course the spider on her arm to make it even more obvious.
Roadhog hides his face behind a mask, has a minigun in his arm (which fires like a shotgun) and of course his hook to pull enemies closer.
D.Va at least had her mech stolen. But her cute face and the color scheme of her outfit and accessories remain. Her weapon still retains the familiar style.
We will never understand why someone stole Mercy’s pants.
But even with other games, some inspiration has been taken and funny mixtures have been created. The ninja Genji has been mixed here with Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII).
Moreover, there are characters from other franchises as well. If you want to, you can play as a stormtrooper from Star Wars – even if he of course doesn’t have the same name, he certainly looks quite like one.
But maybe all of this is just terrible coincidences. Right?
Last year, there was already the copy “Legend of Titan” – which was even a bit bolder.
