During the development of Overwatch, Blizzard received support from “Call of Duty” developers to refine the gunplay.
Overwatch is not only Blizzard’s first first-person shooter, but it is also one of the first games that the PC-centric studio aims to release simultaneously on consoles.
To ensure a good gaming experience on consoles as well, the developers sought help from outside, as Assistant Game Director Aaren Keller reveals in an interview with GamesRadar. If handling the weapons in the game feels pleasant and familiar, it is because “Call of Duty” developers provided support.
CoD developers worked on the “shooting” of Overwatch
According to Keller, the team was in contact with some people from Treyarch, the developers of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, to work on the aim assist (controller). As Keller stated, the support was very helpful, making the gunplay feel “really good” now.
As the Assistant Game Director mentioned, they would collaborate with many Activision studios. Allegedly, the Destiny team once approached them to discuss content creation with the WoW team. Such collaborations seem to be commonplace.
Furthermore, Keller stated that Blizzard is working to release game updates on all platforms as simultaneously as possible. Players should not worry about the PC version getting cool new stuff while consoles would have to wait weeks or months. There should be equality as much as possible. However, for smaller bug fixes, Keller mentioned that it might be a bit different due to the different “code bases” of the platforms.
