The latest patch from Overwatch caused an annoying bug and may have cost some Mercy players the game. We reveal what happened.
Those who played Overwatch yesterday evening (19.09.2017) between 21:00 and 22:00 and selected Mercy, might have rubbed their eyes in disbelief during a match. Suddenly, in the middle of a game, the display for the ultimate was set to 0%.
The reason for this is a bug in the latest patch 1.15 (PC) or 2.19 (PS4 / Xbox One), which was rolled out last evening. This brought changes to existing skins. Both “Winged Victory Mercy” and “Oni Genji” were slightly revised – they received new voicelines when activating their ultimates.
Super hot fix resets the ultimates
However, it seems there was a bug that led to serious issues. As Blizzard explained on Reddit, they completely deactivated the two skins. Players who equipped them automatically switched to the standard skin during a match.
Since this change was applied live during games, players switched their skins in the middle of an ongoing match, and the progress of their ultimates was completely reset.
Meanwhile, Blizzard is working on a fix to ensure that the skins function as intended. Presumably, a hotfix will be rolled out within the next few hours.
Interestingly, Blizzard has clearly developed Overwatch in such a way that such measures can be implemented live during an ongoing game without major issues. Normally, a small update is always needed for that, but these changes took effect right in the middle of the match – much to the dismay of some players, who may have lost their ultimate and possibly even a match because of it.
