Sombra from Overwatch without “Boop”? Fans can’t imagine that. Jeff Kaplan neither.
When the latest Overwatch hero Sombra was announced at BlizzCon 2016 last weekend, the crowd was ecstatic. With just 4 letters, Sombra had hacked directly into the hearts of all attendees: Boop!
But when players were finally able to try out the new hero at BlizzCon, the view into the hero gallery was filled with disappointment. While Sombra – like all other characters – has plenty of voicelines, the “Boop!” was not among them. It didn’t take long for the returnees from BlizzCon to hop onto the official forum to start a “petition”: Sombra needs a “Boop!” voiceline.
Within a short time, the post garnered a fairly high number of approvals, which in turn elicited a response from Jeff Kaplan:
“We’re putting it in, it will replace one of her other lines. *Boop*”
Other forum users asked if there could not also be dances for the characters, as that would be more or less standard in many other games – especially in Blizzard. These dances could be legendary (and thus cost 1000 credits), but like the “Sit” emotes, they should last indefinitely until canceled. On this topic, Jeff Kaplan also provided a response, which while not explicitly confirming dances, makes it very likely:
“We are working on a large number of new emotes. I believe you will be satisfied. However, no timeframe.”
Whether “Boop” makes it directly into the Sombra patch or only in December (when the Symmetra rework is also pending), remains to be seen. The next PTR of Overwatch should go live today or tomorrow.
Cortyn says: No other exclamation describes Sombra’s personality as well as the charismatic “Boop” when she presses a button or a nose. Playful yet genius, ambitious but never entirely serious. It’s almost a riddle how one thought of bringing her into the game without this voiceline after this cinematic.
